Privacy Policy

The short version: Halftone has no account system, no servers of ours, and no ads. The app reads the files you give it and talks to the servers you configure. The only thing it reports back is anonymous usage statistics — never your content (see Analytics). This page exists because stores and OAuth providers require it, but for once the policy is also the pitch.

What the app is

Halftone is a comic and manga reader. You supply all content: files you import, and servers or cloud drives you connect (Komga, Kavita, Audiobookshelf, OPDS catalogs, SMB shares, WebDAV, Dropbox, OneDrive, or a folder from the iOS Files app). The app never bundles, fetches, or sources content itself.

What we collect

Nothing that identifies you. Specifically:

No account. There is nothing to sign up for with us. The only sign-ins the app performs are to your services, initiated by you.
No advertising. The app shows no ads and carries no ad SDKs.
Anonymous usage statistics. The app counts how its features are used, through Google Firebase Analytics. What is and isn't in that data is spelled out in Analytics below — the one-line version: feature usage from fixed category lists, never your content.
No content knowledge. Your library, reading progress, and settings live on your device (and, where you enable it, sync through your own iCloud account or your own Komga/Kavita server — infrastructure you control, not ours).

Where your data actually goes

Your device. The library database, covers, downloads, and settings are stored locally.
Your servers. When you connect Komga, Kavita, an OPDS catalog, SMB, or WebDAV, the app communicates directly with that server. Reading progress syncs two-way with Komga and Kavita because you asked it to.
Your cloud accounts. Dropbox and OneDrive connections use OAuth, and their tokens are stored in the iOS Keychain on your device. A folder you pick through the iOS Files app (iCloud Drive and other providers) is reached through a security-scoped bookmark, also on your device.
Nowhere else. There is no middleman relay, no caching proxy, no "cloud sync" of ours between you and your content. The one thing that leaves the app besides your own traffic is the anonymous usage data described next.

Analytics

The app uses Google Firebase Analytics to count how its features are used, so we know what to improve. Here is exactly what that data is:

What it contains. Which features are used — for example that a reading mode was opened, a type of server was connected, or a purchase screen was shown. Every value comes from a short fixed list of categories built into the app. Alongside that, Firebase records basic device facts: device model, iOS version, app version, country, and session timing.
What it never contains. Comic titles, filenames, folder paths, server addresses, usernames, or anything else from your library or your servers. The app has no way to send free-form text about your content to analytics — the categories are all there is.
Identity. The data is tied to a random identifier Firebase generates for the app installation. It is not your name, email, Apple Account, or advertising ID — the app is built without Firebase's advertising-identifier component, and ad personalization features are turned off.
Incognito. While Incognito mode is on, the app sends no analytics events at all.
Who processes it. Google, on our behalf. How Firebase handles this data is described in Google's Firebase privacy documentation.

Credentials

Server passwords and OAuth tokens are stored in the iOS Keychain, Apple's encrypted credential store, on your device. They are used only to talk to the service they belong to. Backups the app creates never include passwords.

Crash reports

If the app crashes, Apple's standard crash reporting may share a crash log with us — only if you opted into sharing analytics with developers in iOS Settings. Crash logs contain stack traces, not your comics, filenames, or server addresses.

Purchases

Purchases are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We never see your payment details. Receipt validation happens on-device.

This website

This site serves static pages. It sets no cookies — which is why you see no cookie banner — and it carries no advertising and no profiling. If you email us, we use your address to reply and for nothing else.

The beta signup form

The one form on this site is the TestFlight beta signup. It stores exactly what you type — your email address, optionally your name, optionally which setup you read comics with, and optionally a short free-text note about you or your setup — in a file on our own web server. Nothing is collected that you didn't type into that form: no IP logging of our own, no cookies, no fingerprinting. No third-party form service, mailing-list provider, or analytics tool ever sees it. We use it for exactly two things: sending your TestFlight invite, and one launch announcement. To be removed, reply to any of our emails or write to us — we delete your line from the file, and that's that.

Children

The app displays only content you supply and is not directed at children. We collect no names, emails, or other identifying information from anyone, children included; usage statistics are anonymous for everyone.

Changes

If this policy changes materially, the "last updated" date above changes with it and the app's release notes will say so. The core commitment — no account, no ads, no content sourcing — is the product's design, not a settings toggle we might flip.
